My Country Walks

Welcome to my new blog following my move to the Cotswolds in early 2018.

Previously living on the edge of Dartmoor I shared details of my walks on Dartmoor on my previous blog My Dartmoor Walks. As I explore this new area I will share details of the routes here.

Tuesday 26th September 2023 - Chedworth Villa and Yanworth

A figure of eight walk from the lay-bye next to the Hangman's Stone going through Hampnett, past Oxpens Farm, Chedworth Woods, the Roman Villa and Yanworth.

Really heavy rain on the drive to the start and a lot of surface water. We started the walk with waterproofs on but within minutes exactly as forecast the blue sky appeared. 10 miles and 1250 feet of ascent.

The Hangman's stone but no one seems to know why it is called that!

Inside St George's Church. Hampnett and the highly decorated chancel. Apparently painted like this in 1871 by the then vicar Rev W Wiggin.  Mock medieval stencilling.

Yanworth Mill

The site of the Roman Villa Chedworth.  The cafe was open and a very civilised lunch stop complete with coffee.

Yanworth

Apparantly the scene of a very destructive fire
