My Country Walks

Welcome to my new blog following my move to the Cotswolds in early 2018.

Previously living on the edge of Dartmoor I shared details of my walks on Dartmoor on my previous blog My Dartmoor Walks. As I explore this new area I will share details of the routes here.

Tuesday 11th August 2026 - Dixton Hill

It had been intended to do a 7 mile walk but because of the forecast temperatures it was decided to do only 5 miles. From the small car park at the top of Bushcombe Lane, through Bushcombe Wood to pick up the Winchcombe Way and down near Gotherington Halt. Then up to Dixton Hill, through Far Stanley and up again beside the Prescott Hill climb. Finally past Wickfields Farm and back

The photos show just how burned up and brown our coutryside has become after the prolonged drought and high temperatures.

Tuesday 4th August 2026 - Fur Tor

Back with my old friends for the annual walk to Fur Tor starting from Postbridge. Much cooler than yesterday with some light rain on the way out. The ususal route through Sandy Hole Pass and over Cut Hill. Remote Dartmoor at it's best, returning the same way. 10.5 miles with 1500 feet ascent.

The light rain clouds swirl all around.  So refreshing to walk in the rain

Monday 3rd August 2026 - Around Burrator

Back on Dartmoor for a few days. A solo walk aroound Burrator starting from Dousland. Over Yennadon Down to pick up the old railway line, then to follow the leat for a while. Leather tor bridge, Raddick Lane and on to Crazy Well Pool. Across to Down Tor, Combshead Tor, Cuckoo Rock and back on the otherside of the reservoir. I turned out a bit hotter than expected! 11.5 miles.
