My Country Walks

Welcome to my new blog following my move to the Cotswolds in early 2018.

Previously living on the edge of Dartmoor I shared details of my walks on Dartmoor on my previous blog My Dartmoor Walks. As I explore this new area I will share details of the routes here.

Wednesday 25th July 2024 Stanway

A solo walk to review and check the details for one of the published walks on the Winchome Welcoms Walkers website. This starts near the viaduct for the GWR near Stanway. 7 miles with 1000ft ascent.

The viaduct is a signifcant structure but mainlly hidden from view. This is all you can see of it from the road.

A footpath goes right underneath it next to the farm - an impressive structure and almost  work of art too.

You get a much better view of it from the footpath on the other side.

Next into Stanway.

Tuesday 23rd July 2024 - Brimpsfield

From Brimpsfield in the rain. Past Brimpsfield Park and into the long wide valley following the River Froome which leads to Caudle Green where the rain eased and then turned into bright sunshine. Returning through woods to Climperwell Cottage and back to the Brimpsfield. 7 miles with 600ft ascent.

Bright sunshine at the end  with National Grid making sure there was power.

Tuesday 9th July 2024 - Stow on the Wold

From Stow on the Wold going through Donnington and Lower Swell.  A dull overcast morning and after lots of rain overnight we were fortunate it stayed dry. 8 miles with 700 ft ascent.

On Icknield Street a Roman Road running from Bourton-on-the-Water to Templeborough in South Yorkshire.

.....Father Ted!

A labrador once lived here and this special arch was put in so that he had a good view of the field!

Tuesday 2nd July - Hawling

From Hawling going through Guiting Power, Guiting Wood and Roel Gate on a mainly well tested route. A different season compared to the heat wave last week.  Very cool with a cool breeze and dull. 9 miles and 1000ft ascent.

A permissive path near Guting Power which I hadn't been on before - always good to have a new path.
