My Country Walks

Welcome to my new blog following my move to the Cotswolds in early 2018.

Previously living on the edge of Dartmoor I shared details of my walks on Dartmoor on my previous blog My Dartmoor Walks. As I explore this new area I will share details of the routes here.

Tuesday 30th January 2024 - Bike Ride and Churches

I didn't join the group walk today so an opportunity for a bike ride and photos of some churches on route. Just over 30 miles with 1600ft ascent

Alstone - St Margaret

Beckford - St John the Baptist

Dumbelton - St Peter's

Wormington - St Katherine's

Aston Somerville - St Mary's

Stanton - St Michael and All Angels

Stanway - St Peter's

Forgot to stop at Didbrook!

Tuesday 23rd January 2023 - Guiting Power - Stormy Weather

The weather was not as bad as the forecast! The previous weekend Storm Isha had passed over and on the day of our walk Storm Jocelyn was passing over. Winds were strong when we were exposed but the rain was relatively light. Starting from the Critchley Road car park near Guiting Power we first headed to Guting Power then Kineton and Temple Guiting. Finally around the edge of and through Guting Wood. Just 7 miles and 700ft ascent.

17th January 2024 - Cleeve Hill

An easier walk today with the Winchcombe Probus group on Cleeve Hill. 21 members and guests for the first walk of 2024. We faced a bracing northely wind as we headed out to the three masts and then back along the escarpement for lunch in the club house. 3.5 miles.

Tuesday 16th January 2024 Andoversford

Starting in Andoversford. Our route took us through Sevenhampton, Whittington, along the Cotswold Way, the other side of Dowdeswell Reservoir and Lower Dowdeswell. Sunny but with a cool breeze higher up.  A slightly longer walk today, 11.6 miles with 1355feet ascent.

Through Whittington and past the various quarries

On to the Cotswold Way

Around the other side of Dowdeswell reservoir where the permissive path was very muddy. The frosted ground mad the going a little easier.

The old crumbling wall around Sandywell Park

Then alongside the now retired point-to-point racing track in Sandywell Park Showground.  Just one of the four old fences remain, the other have now been removed.

After 48 years of point-to-point racing the last races were run in 2023

Tuesday 9th January 2024 - Northleach

Good to have some bright sunshine but it came with a strong cool northely wind. Our route took us towards the Diamond Way south of Northleach then back through Northleach and Hampnett. 8 miles with 500 feet asent

Wednesday 3rd January 2023 - Sugar Loaf

My first walk in 2024 and my first walk with the Brecon Beacons Park Society. A 7 mile route starting from Llangenny and going up to Sugar Loaf.  One short burst of rain but otherwise we had superb views in all directions. Very wet under foot in places.  About 1700 feet ascent.

Looking across to Table Mountain and Pen-Cerrich-Calch
